The Lawton Gallery at the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay will present “Design with Intent:
5 Decades of Design for Communication,” works by John Rieben, Sept. 13-Oct. 4 in the gallery in Theatre Hall on campus, 2420 Nicolet Drive. An opening reception is scheduled from 4:30-6:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 13, with an artist’s talk slated for 5 p.m.

The exhibition is a retrospective by Rieben, an emeritus professor from UW-Madison, that includes posters and trademarks created during the past 50 years — 42 framed graphic design works and 20 panels of trademarks. Prior to his academic career, Rieben was manager of design at Container Corporation of America, Design Director at UNIMARK International, director of communications at Raychern Corporation, and vice president and creative director at Mobium/RR Donnelley.

“The Great Designer possesses inspired imagination,” Rieben says in his design statement. “The Great Designer creates unique and fresh concepts. The Great Designer will present the IDEA. This unique talent is both intuitive and, with a lot of hard work, learned. … Piece of cake.”

The Lawton Gallery is located in the Theatre Hall building, Room 230, and is open during fall and spring semesters. Gallery hours are 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday.
