Juniors from 11 Northeast Wisconsin schools gather for regional leadership development, April 25

UW-Green Bay and Youth Frontiers partner to build next generation of leaders

Green Bay, Wis. — Juniors from 11 area schools (list of schools below) will join together for a leadership conference designed to inspire student leaders to step up to address important issues like bullying and disrespect in their schools and personal lives. The conference is being organized in partnership by the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay and Youth Frontiers — the leading character education organization in the Upper Midwest.

This unique leadership development opportunity will reach 200 students from diverse backgrounds and academic settings with a single message about using their abilities to improve their schools’ cultures and environments. The conference will be held April 25 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at UW-Green Bay’s Kress Events Center. The conference will be followed by an opportunity for students to participate in a campus information session to learn more about the University.

The conference is designed to build community among students while teaching them to take responsibility for their daily choices and how those choices impact their classmates, teachers and their greater school communities. Ultimately, student participants will define an action plan to help make their schools positive and safe places. School participants:

  • Hilbert High School
  • Stockbridge High School
  • Pulaski High School
  • Preble High School
  • Green Bay West High School
  • Green Bay Southwest High School
  • Manitowoc Roncalli High School
  • Gibraltar High School
  • Sheboygan North High School
  • Hortonville High School

“Our world needs strong leaders more than ever,” said UW-Green Bay Chancellor Gary L. Miller. “Giving young adults the tools needed to lead in their schools, homes and hometowns will carry forward to their colleges and places of work and underscores the role we all play in creating the environment and culture we want to live in.”

Founded in 1987, Youth Frontiers inspires students to live out the values of kindness, courage, respect and leadership in their personal and school lives. Youth Frontiers aims to change the way kids treat each other in every hallway, lunch line and classroom of every school in America. Last school year, the nationally renowned nonprofit held 825 retreats for more than 125,000 students and educators. Since its inception, Youth Frontiers has reached more than 1.6 million students and educators through their character development programs.

“We teach values — unapologetically — because we want today’s young people to make tomorrow’s world better,” said Joe Cavanaugh, Founder and CEO of Youth Frontiers. As awareness and concern around the issues of bullying and disrespect continue to grow, schools are looking for help. Schools understand that for real change to occur, students need to take responsibility for the culture of their schools.

An independent evaluation of the Youth Frontiers Leadership Conference shows that participation results in cognitive, attitudinal and behavioral shifts that decrease students’ distractions from learning and build a positive school community.
