A New Album is Born in Gypsy Trip’s Live Recording Session at the Weidner Center!
GREEN BAY – UW-Green Bay Music’s 2017-2018 6:30 Concert Series at the Weidner Center for the Performing Arts completes its season, Thursday, April 26 with local favorite, Gypsy Trip. The band brings its eclectic blend of gypsy jazz, pop influences and original compositions back to Fort Howard Hall — with a twist! Patrons can come for a pre-show cocktail and stay to witness the live recording of the band’s second album, the follow-up to their first recording, Alt-Nostalgia (2015).
The new album will consist entirely of original compositions written by band members Michelle McQuade Dewhirst, Adam Gaines and Stefan Hall. The recording will be engineered by Assistant Professor of Music Bill Sallak, assisted by students from his Music Technology Systems course. Sallak is currently developing a new degree track in recording technology at UW-Green Bay.
The performance begins at 6:30 pm in Fort Howard Hall, and lasts 60 to 90 minutes. The cash bar will be available starting at 5 p.m. in Studio One; the house opens at 6 p.m. Reservations strongly encouraged as organizers anticipate a full house. About the band members:
Marisa Balistreri, UW-Green Bay’s Performing Arts Coordinator, used to be a professional opera singer in Italy. “How she ended up playing violin in a jazz band is a really long story, but it involves a dude.”
Bassist, Michael Dewhirst, is an active freelance performer with a thriving cello studio. “He is six years younger than his bass, but at least two hundred pounds heavier than his amp. Both of these things are pleasing.”
Associate Professor of Music, Michelle McQuade Dewhirst, “is a composer, horn player, knitter and copious consumer of caffeine. She makes really good ice cream if she does say so herself.”
Adam Gaines, Associate Professor of Music at UW-Green Bay, “plays professionally in a number of groups and styles throughout Northeast Wisconsin and as far afield as his wife, Ladislava’s, native Slovakia.”
Ladislava Gaines began her musical studies on the accordion and holds a Doctorate of Saxophone Performance from the Academy of Arts in Banska Bystrica, Slovakia.
Stefan Hall “could have been one of the 1,352 guitar pickers in Nashville. Instead, he wound up teaching Ancient and Medieval Studies at the UW-Green Bay.
Green Bay native and product of UW-Green Bay Music, Adam “Gravy” LeGrave, “joined Gypsy Trip on percussion about five years ago and the rest of the band hasn’t figured out how to get rid of him.”
