UW System statement on budget lapse, campus-by-campus

The UW System issued a statement Tuesday (Oct. 18) after learning a state-ordered budget lapse could cost institutions $46 million in state taxpayer support during fiscal year 2011-12, plus an additional $19.6 million next fiscal year. At UW-Green Bay, such reductions could amount to $1.6 million over the next 20 months. UW System officials note that although the UW System typically represents about 7% of the state’s GPR expenditures, it is being asked to absorb about 38% of this cut under the plan, subject to approval by the Legislature’s Joint Committee on Finance. “These disproportionately large cuts will hurt every UW institution’s ability to spur regional economic growth and to help all of Wisconsin emerge from a persistent economic recession,” the System statement said.
