Barrie Olympian Lukan takes ‘bold’ move into fashion world

Megan Lukan is taking a run at streetwear.

The 2016 Rio Olympic Games bronze medallist, who played rugby at Barrie Central Collegiate, has designed the “authentically BOLD” clothing line, which is set to officially launch in January. A few staple items — a hat and three T-shirts — have been released so far.

“The premise of the brand is to empower individuals to live out their authentic dreams,” she said. “Through my personal experiences and encounters with many individuals I have come to the realization that a lot of people are really scared to chase the dreams inside their hearts. Whether it’s fear of failure, anxiety stemmed from the unknown, or even societal pressures, people often fail to live the life that is genuinely true to them.”

Lukan retired from the Canadian women’s rugby sevens team about one year ago.

She was a crossover athlete who was named Miss Basketball Canada in 2010 had a four-year NCAA basketball career at the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay. While she’s currently completing her master of business administration at Queen’s University in Kingston, she looked back on her athletic career for inspiration when developing the brand.
