Look for a new ‘focused’ GB Orientation

Formerly known as “FOCUS R&R” a renamed and rejuvenated “GB Orientation” will welcome incoming first-year Phoenix. Here’s a quick orientation to the new-and-improved GB Orientation.

What’s in a name? In the case of rebranding the new-student orientation program from “FOCUS R&R” to “GB Orientation,” it’s truly an example of substance over style. Ironically, one of the biggest changes is now the program is more focused—specifically with students taking the lead in launching fledgling Phoenix.

“We’re excited to create a summer orientation that truly engages our new students and parents in a modern and intentional program highlighting our amazing student leaders.” Says Eric Arneson, vice chancellor for student affairs and campus climate. “The re-imagining of GB Orientation is an example of our priority on students.”

GB Orientation is a one-day program for all incoming first-year students offered during the first two weeks of June. Students will be able to register for fall classes, make connections and get off to a solid start on their journey from day-one to commencement.

One of the driving forces in that re-imagining, Claudia Guzmán, director of Student Life, credits a collaborative process with a committee consisting of 24 faculty, staff and students. “Ultimately what we wanted to do is a more dynamic and student-centered approach.”

Arneson agrees. “Claudia brought a fresh perspective in terms of creating intentionality to GB Orientation.”  The result is an event-packed day with mini-tours, question and answer sessions and more, with University Student Ambassadors working closely with incoming first-year students every step of the way.”

Faculty, staff and other members of the Phoenix flock can show their support by reviewing all communications, websites and documents to ensure that FOCUS has been replaced by GB Orientation. Here are the major talking points:

  • GB Orientation (formerly known as FOCUS R&R) is a one-day event for incoming first-year students. Parents/guardians/supporters are also encouraged to attend.
  • There are eight dates in June, including Saturday options. There will also be a half-day session offered in August.
  • GB Welcome (formerly known as FOCUS Orientation) will be held September 1-3. Highlights include: Move-In, Convocation and a community service project.
