Sneak peak: Sutton’s ‘Searching for Romeo’ is featured musical for 2016/17

UW-Green Bay Theatre, Dance and Music personnel are excited to share a sneak peak into their 2016-17 line-up. “We are happy to announce that we will be producing Brian Sutton’s Searching for Romeo, which was previously produced as part of the 2014 New York Musical Theatre Festival. A New York Times reviewer described it as ‘a teenage rom-com wrapped around a tragedy.’ Searching for Romeo presents a new rom-com (romantic comedy) take on Romeo and Juliet with a pop music score. With the playwright literally in residence, beyond our supportive musical theatre audience, this show could well be a perfect vehicle to further reach out to our area high schools where more than 400 years after the fact, Romeo and Juliet is still avidly studied and oft performed.”

Who is this Sutton fellow?

For those of you who haven’t met Brian Sutton, he is an associate professor at UWGB who teaches English composition and directs the University’s student Writing Center. He wrote both script and music for the play. His New York production was the winner of the 2014 Stage Rights/NYMF Publishing Award, a program of The New York Musical Theatre Festival. You can find clips from seven songs recorded by the 2014 New York cast, photos and reviews at https://www.stagerights.com/allshows/searchingromeo/.
