Dog day afternoon: Brown County K9 presents demo at UW-Green Bay

A little doggie dental work couldn’t keep Brown County Sheriff’s K9 Racky from showing his stuff Thursday (March 27), during an on-campus demo designed to engage students and enhance connections to UW-Green Bay Public Safety.

Part of the University’s “Coffee with a Cop” outreach program, the hour-long demonstration featured Racky and his handler, Brown County Deputy Zach Roush. The pair demonstrated basic obedience, training commands (all in Dutch, Racky’s native language), an attack scenario and more during the session in Phoenix Room C.

Racky was recovering from a couple of dental procedures the previous day, so biting drills were off the table, Roush told about 40 student and staff attendees. But with a training muzzle — and the generous assistance of Public Safety Officer Chad Kleman, playing the bad guy —  Racky showed how he doggedly pursues and engages suspects when called upon. Roush also answered questions about the housing, training and day-to-day work of Racky, a narcotics K9.

The session was the latest in the University’s “Coffee with a Cop” series, which offers members of the UW-Green Bay community the chance to discuss pertinent issues, ask questions and become better acquainted with Public Safety officers.
