Congratulations to Wardle, Phoenix on Marquette win

With a stifling zone defense, another standout performance (20 points) by electric sophomore point guard Keifer Sykes, and some key plays late by center Alec Brown, the UW-Green Bay men’s basketball team posted its biggest win of the Coach Brian Wardle era Wednesday night at the Resch Center. The Phoenix upset Marquette 49-47 in front of 6,733 fans. It was the long-awaited first game to be played in Green Bay after nearly a dozen previous Phoenix trips to Milwaukee over the past 30 years. Green Bay (4-7) is back in action Saturday night hosting South Dakota. More on Wednesday’s thrilling victory.

“Don’t expect a return visit by the Marquette men’s basketball team to the Green Bay area any time soon, if ever. Not after the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay’s stunning 49-47 upset of the Golden Eagles Wednesday night at the Resch Center.” That’s what Green Bay Press-Gazette sports editor Mike Vandermause wrote in a Dec. 21 column.
