In the media: Budget lapse poses challenge for UW schools

Local media are picking up on the news of a state-ordered budget lapse that could mean a total of $1.6 million in reductions for UW-Green Bay during the next 20 months. The UW System has noted that while the System generally represents about 7 percent of the state’s GPR expenditures, it is being asked to absorb 38 percent of the cut under the plan unveiled late last week (which is subject to approval by the Legislature’s Joint Committee on Finance). Chancellor Thomas Harden told WLUK Fox 11 that learning of more cuts now poses a significant challenge. “The longer you go into a budget year, the more difficult it gets to make reductions, because you’ve already committed and spent the money,” Harden said.
