Regents say 5.5 percent tuition hike was forced by state cutbacks

UW System Regents say they had to impose a 5.5% tuition increase to make up for cuts in state funding. A small group of students protested the tuition increase during last week’s Board meeting. Journal-Sentinel coverage is online.

Student regents take time to explain their ‘yes’ votes
Prior to Thursday’s vote to increase UW System tuition, the two students who are members of the Board of Regents, Aaron Wingad and Jessica Schwalenberg, spoke about the conundrum they faced. They feel the need to represent fellow students, most of whom are frustrated with ever-escalating college costs, but they know the UW System is caught between a rock and a hard place.
