Community garden, helped by philanthropy course, digs in at Green Bay West

A community garden project that received funding last fall through UW-Green Bay’s Strategic Philanthropy course took another step forward Tuesday (May 28) with a planting event at Green Bay West High School. The school’s Wildcat Community Garden is designed to address local “food desert” issues while also symbolically showcasing and celebrating diversity. On Tuesday, students planted the “Three Sisters Garden,” which consists of corn, beans and squash, according to a report from WLUK, Fox 11. That particular garden pays tribute to Native American culture, while other areas will honor the African American, Asian and Latino cultures, as well as the gay and lesbian community. Organizers plan to donate fresh produce to students and families in need, as well as local food pantries. UW-Green Bay’s Strategic Philanthropy course chose the West proposal for its first gift, a $5,000 anonymous donation presented under the auspices of the Grater Green Bay Community Foundation. Assistant Prof. Lora Warner, who teaches the course, was on hand for the planting.
