Cutting down the nets, again

Veteran sportswriter Gary D’Amato nicely captured the success of UW-Green Bay women’s basketball in his Monday account of the latest Phoenix NCAA bid, earned via yet another Horizon League championship. For the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, he wrote:

Green Bay – The UW-Green Bay athletic department probably has a line item in its annual budget for extra nets at the Kress Events Center.

That’s because the women’s basketball team keeps cutting them down.

The top-seeded Phoenix won its fifth consecutive Horizon League championship game – all at the Kress Center – by throttling third-seeded Loyola, 54-38, on Sunday afternoon.

A couple of seniors, tournament MVP Adrian Ritchie of De Pere and Sarah Eichler of Grafton, who joined Ritchie on the all-tournament team, had the honor of cutting down the nets, with many in the crowd of 2,367 sticking around to watch.

It’s one habit that never gets old. “The nets fray pretty easy these days,” joked Phoenix coach Kevin Borseth. “It was time to change them, anyway.”
