In the news: Helpap offers take for story on female voters

Assistant Prof. David Helpap discussed the role of female voters in the gubernatorial election Friday (Oct. 17), providing context for a news story on NBC 26. Democratic challenger Mary Burke has polled well among women but saw her advantage with that group largely disappear in the most recent Marquette Law School Poll, Helpap said. Women’s issues have been at the forefront throughout the election, he added. “Reproductive issues or the wage gap of violence or gun rights,” he said, “these types of things are often very controversial but very salient to people.” On both sides, it will be critical for the candidates to mobilize their bases ahead of the Nov. 4 election, Helpap said.
