In the news: Education’s Kaufman addresses controversial teacher-prep report

Education Chair Tim Kaufman addressed a controversial teacher preparation report in a Wednesday (June 18) interview with NBC 26, calling into question the methodology and conclusions of the National Council on Teacher Quality review released earlier this week. Now in its second year, the report relies on course syllabi to draw its conclusions about how well teachers are prepared, an approach that’s been widely panned nationwide. “NCTQ ranked programs simply looking at syllabi, never talking to us or stepping foot on campus,” Kaufman said. He spoke with reporter Raquel Lamal about the importance of looking at outcomes, including teacher placement rates and demand for UW-Green Bay grads in Northeastern Wisconsin districts. As Log readers will recall, UW-Green Bay’s Professional Program in Education received the 2011 UW System Regents Teaching Excellence Award for outstanding academic department, based in large part on how the program prepares future teachers.
