Faculty note: Shelton publishes book on public education

UW-Green Bay Assistant Prof. Jon Shelton (Democracy and Justice Studies), has published a book entitled Teacher Strike! Public Education and the Making of a New American Political Order. Using archival material from six different cities, the book tells the story of how teacher organization in the 1960s, 70s, and 80s became enmeshed in urban politics, racial conflict and fiscal crisis. Built on the foundation of a prize-winning dissertation, Teacher Strike! argues that the politicization of teachers’ work played a pivotal role in shaping the political and economic trajectory of the US during a critical era. Published in the University of Illinois Press’s Working Class in American History series — the preeminent book series for labor history — the book is now available in hardcover, paperback and e-book format.
