Posthumous honor for Dolan draws standing ovation

Honor for Prof. David Dolan

UW-Green Bay awarded emeritus status to three former faculty members — Associate Prof. Victoria Goff, Senior Lecturer Brent Hussin and Professor David Dolan — at mid-year convocation in the Phoenix Room.

The award to Dolan was presented posthumously. The reading of the citation and plaque inscription drew a standing ovation from the hundreds of faculty, staff and retirees in attendance. A transcript of Provost Julia Wallace’s remarks is as follows:

Our third presentation today involves the late Prof. David Dolan…

Prof. David Dolan plaqueDavid, sadly, died suddenly last June at age 63. His passing was a great shock. It took from our presence one of the finest faculty members, most influential researchers and nicest gentlemen we’ve had the pleasure of knowing.

In memory of David, it was determined, unanimously, that it would be fitting to recognize his career and contributions through the awarding of emeritus status.

David’s widow, Mary, is traveling today and unable to join us. She has asked that two longtime friends and NAS colleagues of her husband — Profs. Gregory Davis and Michael Draney — accept the award on the family’s behalf.

David M. Dolan… Professor Emeritus…

At the time of his death, Dr. Dolan was the reigning recipient of the UW-Green Bay Founders Award for Excellence in Scholarship, an honor richly deserved. In a UWGB career that started in 1999 and, before that, as an environmental scientist for more than two decades, with the EPA and International Joint Commission, Dr. Dolan had established himself as one of the preeminent water-quality researchers on the Great Lakes. A talented statistician, mathematician and environmental scientist, he used advanced modeling to tackle exceedingly complex watershed problems and identify practical solutions. He was a resource to countless colleagues and students, both graduate and undergraduate. He was a superb ambassador for this University and its Environmental Sciences programs.

“For a too-short career of tireless commitment to students, colleagues and the environment…” We bestow the title “Professor Emeritus” on David M. Dolan.
