Advisory: identity theft and fraudulent tax filings

The University of Wisconsin System’s Service Center, which provides payroll and benefits support to employees statewide, reminds consumers to be vigilant regarding instances of identity theft. The issue is in the news nationally and locally this spring with a number of widely publicized instances of data-security breaches, and an increasing number of reports involving variations on the fraudulent-tax-return-and-stealing-your-refund scam. The Service Center encourages UW employees (and any citizens, for that matter) who have concerns their information might be compromised to visit the the IRS website. Information on federal tax return fraud can also be accessed on UW-Green Bay’s Information Security page at the CIT website — along with valuable tips on a variety of related topics.
