The award, given by the Supreme House Montessori School in Lagos, Nigeria, was presented to Cole in partnership with the Quality Assurance and Research Development Agency (QAARDAN) of Nigeria. The recognition spoke to appreciation for a “job well done for the immense contributions to the enormous growth of education in Nigeria.”

In her role as an ambassador of UW-Green Bay, Cole used the trip to strengthen the relationship between the University and educational entities in Nigeria, and promote UW-Green Bay’s Accomplished Educator Professional Development Certificate (PDC) Program.

Her travels also included a presentation at the Lagos State Government Ministry of Education International Educational Summit, held on May 22. This presentation promoted the PDC to educators as an effective and innovative program for promoting quality assurance in teaching and learning.

“I was pleasantly surprised and honored to receive this award,” said Cole. “Promoting the Institute’s PDC program was easy for me given that I’ve been immersed in the behind-the-scenes aspects of the program from its inception. It is a proven and innovative program that transforms educators into reflective practitioners who understand the art and science of teaching and know how to perform classroom action research. I wanted this for Nigerian educators to successfully prepare students for a competitive world.”

In May of 2013, prior to Cole’s trip, nine Nigerian educators and administrators visited UW-Green Bay and local schools to exchange teaching practices and explore school/University partnerships. As part of the weeklong itinerary, the Nigerian educators were invited to visit Green Bay West High School, the Wisconsin International School in De Pere, Red Smith and Heritage Elementary schools, Providence Academy, the Howard-Suamico School District and St. Norbert College.

Theresa Okafor is Director of QAARDAN, which trains teachers and encourages professional development through workshops and tours of schools located in the United Kingdom, France, Canada and the U.S. Okafor said the relationship between UW-Green Bay and QAARDAN will provide Nigerian schools with better teachers and, ultimately, better students.

“We’re open to learn from the expertise we’ve witnessed,” Okafor said. “We’ve seen the teachers and faculty are very resourceful and experienced, everything they have had to share is research-based, evidence-based teaching strategies.”

Cole is a bachelor’s (1975) and master’s degree (1980) graduate of UW-Green Bay.

We’re told, much as last week, that spinach, lettuce, arugula, kale and herbs (cilantro, chives, summer savory, tarragon, and sage) will be available for purchase. Also this week: daikon radishes and bok choi for that Asian stir fry that you have been planning. As always, small bills are appreciated. The organizers have also asked us to note, for people planning to check out the Union’s “Get the Scoop” ice cream stand nearby on that day, “There is no waiting in line for healthy greens!”

Our university magazine, Inside 360°, recently carried a story about a graduate of UW-Green Bay’s Theatre program getting the chance to direct on Broadway. Well, just a week later, we see another Theatre grad turned director is hitting it big, this time on the West Coast. Joel Sass, Class of 1989, is garnering excellent reviews for his direction of the U.S. premiere of the David Farr play “The Heart of Robin Hood.” The play is one of the non-Bard entries at the annual and highly respected Oregon Shakespeare Festival. Sass, also featured previously in Inside, practices his art on a regular basis with the Jungle Theater and Guthrie Theatre in Minneapolis. If you’re interested a review of his revisionist Robin Hood (“Sass propels things at the breakneck pace of melodrama…”), click here to read more.

A familiar name in a new role is previewing the 100th season of the Green Bay Symphony Orchestra, headquartered at the Weidner Center. Longtime Green Bay Press-Gazette critic-at-large Warren Gerds is now in a similar role at WFRV, Channel 5, and he covered the GBSO’s new season in a recent report. In it, Gerds makes note of the GBSO’s connection to UW-Green Bay and founding Chancellor Edward Weidner, and talks about the orchestra’s milestone anniversary. As you may recall, the GBSO moved its administrative offices to the Weidner Center last summer, a logical logistical move that also represented a key step in the Weidner’s revitalization plan (one element of which calls for closer collaboration with community and other arts groups). The GBSO’s milestone 100th season kicks off Saturday, Oct. 12 with “Octoberfest!” For Gerds’ report and to view the complete season, click the links below:

We told you here yesterday about Gov. Scott Walker’s move to withdraw the nomination of UW-Platteville student Joshua Inglett to the Board of Regents after it was revealed Inglett had signed a gubernatorial recall petition in 2011. That decision is being by turns supported and criticized around the state today, with the leader of a UW-Madison student group calling for changes in state law pertaining to how student Regents are selected. David Gardner, the chair of Associated Students of Madison, said he’d like the law to mandate, rather than permit, that student candidates for the board are selected from nominees put forth by elected student government representatives. Inglett himself also is speaking out, saying he feels his character has been attacked during this process.
