UW-Green Bay’s signature Phuture Phoenix program has awarded more than $32,000 in new and renewing scholarships, continuing to fulfill its mission of making college a reality for students from low-income schools.

The Phuture Phoenix program at the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay aims to increase the odds that students from at-risk schools will graduate from high school and also pursue higher education.

Phuture Phoenix involves bringing area fifth-graders from Title I elementary schools from throughout Northeastern Wisconsin to spend a day on campus as a means to envision themselves as future college students. Phuture Phoenix mentors—UW-Green Bay student volunteers—continue contact with many of these students in Phase II of the program. The mentors work closely with students in grades 6-12, tutoring and mentoring them.

Since its inception in 2002, Phuture Phoenix has connected with more than 10,000 students, encouraging them to do well in school and dream of a future they may not have considered by moving on to higher education. The program was designed because Northeastern Wisconsin has a lower percentage of students in the state graduating high school and going on to higher education.

Numerous faculty, staff and students ran the half or full marathon events, and a host of alumni (and their family members and friends) staffed a hydration/energy gel station near the 7-mile mark. There was terrific turnout for this Alumni Association volunteer event, and we’ve got some great photos from the day in our new gallery. It also includes some terrific shots from the first-ever commencement-day alumni receiving line, which helped our awesome alums welcome new grads to the club. Check it out.

News of a likely UW System tuition freeze drew local and state interest late last week, with lawmakers, officials and students weighing in. And while it’s too early to determine just what a freeze will mean for UW-Green Bay and other System schools, news media have been interested in the impacts and what’s next. UW-Green Bay Vice Chancellor for Business and Finance Kelly Franz spoke last week with Fox 11’s Laura Smith for a piece on the impact of the freeze, which we’ve linked to below. Smith also interviewed students, including Student Government Association President Heba Mohammad — who said a freeze might not be a good thing for students. Full story.

Our own Dave Kieper was featured Monday (May 20) in an NBC 26 news story examining the potential privacy pitfalls of smartphone use. With so many people now relying on smartphones for banking and other sensitive transactions, hackers increasingly are targeting the devices, the story says. “You have that phone and it’s unsecured, boom, very quickly you’re in trouble,” IT specialist Kieper told reporter Alex Hagan. Hackers have begun to make downloadable apps to attack consumers, Kieper said, and consumers need to be aware and protect themselves — and their devices — from unscrupulous people. Full story.

As we told you here last week, WFRV, Channel 5’s Tara Joyce recently completed an in-depth series on women in the workforce, spurred by Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg’s controversial new book, “Lean In.” A UW-Green Bay discussion on the book was featured in all three segments of the series, which ran Wednesday, Thursday and Friday of last week. In case you missed the series, or would like to view it again, you can check out all three parts by clicking the following links. Segment 2 also features 1991 UW-Green Bay alumna Julie Van Straten, who gives Joyce an up-close look at her efforts to balance family and career. Van Straten was named a UW-Green Bay Distinguished Alumna during a ceremony earlier this month.

Gov. Scott Walker’s travels continue to spur talk of a possible 2016 presidential run, and trips to Connecticut, New York and Iowa this week are furthering speculation. Prof. Emeritus Michael Kraft sat down Monday (May 20) with WFRV, Channel 5’s Jenn Sullivan, to discuss what the tour may mean. “Iowa is one of the leading states, so the fact that he accepts an invitation to speak in Iowa prepares for, or is a sign he has a selective audience and he’s among a few national prominent Republicans,” Kraft said. Full story.

Shawn Robinson, multicultural adviser in the American Intercultural Center, has been accepted as a fellow of the 2013 Peabody Professional Achievement Gap Institute at Peabody College of Vanderbilt University. The one-week institute runs Monday, June 10 through Friday, June 14, focusing on assisting educators and administrators in understanding and closing the achievement gap in their classrooms and school districts. As we told you here before — and as you may have read in the recently published issue of Inside 360° magazine — Robinson has done extensive research on the topic of black males and dyslexia. Robinson is dyslexic and was functionally illiterate until the age of 18, but thanks to hard work, determination and proper diagnosis, is now finishing his Ph.D. His dissertation is on this topic, and he’s presented at numerous conferences this year.
