Avast! Dietetic interns help consumers search for ‘Hidden Gems’ and ‘Fools Gold’

Leave it to the UWGB dietetics interns to throw a little fun into a nutritional lesson. They helped consumers “unearth hidden health gems and identify fool’s gold,” when partnering with St. Mary’s Hospital — A Woman’s Place and Festival Foods to offer a free on-location nutrition class to the community Feb. 4. The interactive pirate-themed event took participants on a treasure hunt through the Suamico Festival Foods isles. Guided stops included the oil shelves, deli, cereal isle, dairy section, and freezers. The tour, complete with a treasure map, lead adventurers through dietary pitfalls and nutritional treasures and even offered samples at several of the stops. Interns referenced the Festival Foods NuValu system as well as nutrition labels to offer meaningful food comparisons. Attendees left with a UWGB dietetics reusable grocery bag, a folder of handy reference materials and knowledge to navigate the treacherous and treasure-filled isles of their next grocery store visit.
