Beverly Carmichael, Assistant Chancellor for University Advancement at the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay, has tendered her resignation effective Monday, July 15. University Development Director Jeanne Stangel will take over her position on an interim basis until a permanent replacement is hired.

Carmichael is leaving UW-Green Bay to take the position of Vice President for Institutional Advancement at Flagler College in St. Augustine, Fla., her undergraduate alma mater. And while she describes the new position as her “dream job,” Carmichael says it is nonetheless difficult to leave UW-Green Bay.

“This decision brings with it much emotion, as leaving UW-Green Bay truly is bittersweet,” Carmichael said. “I have so enjoyed serving as Assistant Chancellor for University Advancement, and I have come to love this University more each day. I believe in the mission and the heart of UW-Green Bay, and I will miss it very much.”

Carmichael has held her current position for nearly three years, after taking over the role July 15, 2010. Her hire was a return to UW-Green Bay, where she’d served in the same position on an interim basis in late 2000 and early 2001. Carmichael has an extensive fundraising background, having spent the five years prior to her 2010 hire as a partner and fundraising consultant with The Winston Group in Green Bay. Prior to that, she served as the director of corporate relations at St. Norbert College in De Pere and as the director of development at Flagler. She began her professional career as a third-grade teacher in Florida, and she and her husband, Don Carmichael, always intended to return there eventually. Carmichael has been an active community volunteer, involved in numerous organizations including the Community Partnership for Children, the Women’s Fund of Greater Green Bay, the Encompass Early Education and Care Foundation and many others.

During her three years at UW-Green Bay, Carmichael’s accomplishments and successes have been many. She reorganized the University’s Advancement Division and was instrumental in establishing the UW-Green Bay Foundation, Inc., launched in April 2011 to give the University greater flexibility in managing gifts and assets, and in being proactive in its private fundraising. Under her leadership, fundraising numbers have increased year-over-year, and the University successfully implemented a rebranding initiative during the 2012-13 academic year. Carmichael was a co-founder of the University’s After Thoughts series of programs, which gather women for learning, networking and socialization after the workday ends.

Carmichael will be missed, said UW-Green Bay Chancellor Tom Harden.

“Bev Carmichael has done so much for this University, and we certainly will miss her leadership, knowledge and enthusiastic advocacy on behalf of UW-Green Bay,” Harden said. “I also have every confidence that Jeanne Stangel, in her interim role, will help us achieve a smooth and successful transition during this time of change.”

Stangel has served as UW-Green Bay’s Director of Development for more than a year, previously having held the role of associate athletic director, senior women’s athletics administrator and director of the Phoenix Fund, the fundraising arm of UW-Green Bay Athletics. A 1987 graduate alumna of UW-Green Bay, Stangel has held a variety of other positions with the University, amassing nearly 25 years experience as a student, administrator, alumna and advocate. She maintains extensive community and professional ties.

“We are all sorry to lose such a dynamic leader, though we wish Dr. Carmichael nothing but the best in her new role,” Stangel said. “Through hard work, mutual support and Dr. Carmichael’s continued guidance, we will continue doing her tireless work on behalf of this great University.”

Carmichael will begin her new duties at Flagler College Aug. 1. The school is a four-year liberal arts college in St. Augustine, Fla., with a student enrollment of approximately 2,600. Accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges, Flagler awards Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Fine Arts and Bachelor of Science in Public Administration degrees in a variety of major, minor, pre-professional and external academic programs.

UW-Green Bay’s Institute for Learning Partnership has awarded nearly $41,000 in Grants to Improve Teaching and Learning for the 2013-14 academic year.

The grants will support learning in six Northeastern Wisconsin school districts, funding a variety of initiatives that promote literacy, target the academic achievement gap, incorporate technology and more. The $40,954.24 in awards, ranging in amount from $1,450 to $7,500, were announced Friday, May 3. The recipients are as follows, listed along with an excerpt from their grant application:

Bowler Public School District, Bowler Elementary School teacher Stephanie Brown — Improving Science Scores and Interest through Einstein Kits ($1,678.84): “Hands-on learning is very important to students’ comprehension to concepts. As the sixth grade teacher at Bowler Elementary School, I struggle teaching science from 12-year-old textbooks, no science materials for hands-on learning and a budget that will not allow me to purchase hands-on science materials for the entire year. Children are born scientists because of their curiosity throughout their life. I want to channel that curiosity and give my students, especially females, economically disadvantaged, students with disabilities and minority students, the chance to get hands-on with science. My goal is to increase their interest and scores in science based on surveys by parents and students and pre and post assessments.”

Green Bay Area Public School District, Green Bay East High School teachers and staff Ruth Berken, Linda Bornbach, Brian Fisk, Rich Krieg, Julie Ollmann and Mark Strohschein — Green Bay East Composting Project ($3,000): “Green Bay East High teachers created a plan to introduce a composting component to the existing curriculum. There would be two phases. Phase I is vermicomposting within science and agriscience classrooms. Phase II involves the creation of static piles with the ultimate goal of reducing the amount of biodegradable material that is deposited in a landfill.”

Howard-Suamico Public School District, Bay View Middle School teacher Oksana Kobzar-Schweiner — Increasing Academic Vocabulary Among ELL Students ($1,450): “The main intent of this study is to decrease the academic gap between the ELL students and mainstream students at Bay View Middle School. The purpose of this action research is to examine whether providing wide variety of reading resources and vocabulary apps to middle school English language learners will improve students’ reading comprehension by increasing their vocabulary development. The goal of the project is to give students as much exposure and experience with new vocabulary words and provide a wide range of reading material and vocabulary apps available on Kindle Fire to motivate students to read both at home and in school.”

Laona Public School District, Robinson Elementary School teacher Stacey Flannery — Laptops for Laona Learners ($7,500): “Laptops for Laona Learners is working in collaboration with all regular education teachers and our special education department to enhance our students’ technology skills while also increasing their written language skills to be proficient or advanced. We believe larger screens and keyboards are easier for writing assignments that require students to be able to open and toggle through various programs and websites; along with assisting Special Ed learners who may have fine motor or visual perception deficits. Teachers will enhance their differentiated instruction, as well as meet accommodation and modification needs of students. With upcoming changes to standardized tests and the high demand for technological skills in our society, our mission is to provide students with opportunities to be successful.”

Laona Public School District, Robinson Elementary School teachers Sheryl Hendricks, Kathy Krawze and Kelly Crede — iPads for Differentiated Instruction-Part III ($7,500): “The iPads for Differentiated Instruction Part III will be an extension of our current research, which has included collaboration between K-3 regular and special education teachers and staff. Implementation of Part III of our project will be directed towards teachers having a classroom set of iPads so that differentiation can be incorporated into all lessons for all learners. Students will become more proficient users of technology as well as experiencing reading and math instruction through multiple learning styles. Teachers will be able to develop effective lessons that incorporate technology and allow for lessons to be tailored to meet each individual student’s needs. This extension will allow for continued collection of data to reflect upon the continued student growth from year to year.”

Manitowoc Public School District, McKinley Academy teacher Gina Wagner — Healthy Living Soul Sisters ($6,997.50): “Our Healthy Living Soul Sister project is aimed at closing the achievement gap through wellness. Research clearly indicates the impact that wellness has on academic performance and achievement. We work in a school with 60 at-risk teens that come from very challenging home situations. Many of our students participate in risky and unhealthy behaviors that affect their daily performance in school, including poor nutrition, poor sleeping habits, lack of physical activity, drugs and alcohol. Our project is focused on our female population. Our goal is to equip our female students with the knowledge, skills, and benefits of healthy lifestyles and relationships and instill a desire to maintain this way of living. Ultimately, we are hopeful in seeing improved academic performance due to the empowerment of healthy lifestyle choices.”

Wrightstown Community School District teacher Krista Samb — Content Area Literacy through Technology in Art Room ($6,977.90): “Interdisciplinary literacy, content area literacy, and the Common Core Standards are evident and will rapidly change the way that students learn and teachers teach in the WCSD. The rapidly changing technology-based global economy has our schools falling behind, and our students deserve better resources to close that gap. The acquisition of the technology cart can be used as a way to broaden students’ learning and their idea of what traditional art is through two-dimensional and three-dimensional exploration. The capability of the technology carts will also allow for student collaboration and engagement in more in-depth discussions, art critiques of projected images, the ability for students to show off their own work more effectively, and to promote teamwork and critical thinking skills with the use of the tablets. These opportunities help prepare students more effectively toward being college and career ready. Another important aspect of 21st century skills these carts will address is the students’ ability to engage in public speaking opportunities with their peers and the ability to share visual literacy knowledge with others. The added technology for all art classes will also aid students by developing a sense of independence for a variety of different learners and different learning styles.”

UW-Green Bay Associate Prof. Scott Ashmann — Integrating iPads into a Nature-Based 4K Program ($5,850): “The nature-based four-year-old kindergarten program at the Bay Beach Wildlife Sanctuary will begin in Fall 2013. Sponsored by the Green Bay Area Public School District, 16-20 students will be enrolled in a morning session with another 16-20 students in the afternoon. Students will spend the entire session outdoors (unless weather conditions are unsafe) under the direction of a licensed teacher and a naturalist. Nature-based programs are typically devoid of technology since it seems ironic to some educators that nature and technology be intertwined. However, we want to test that assumption, and we hypothesize that there are highly effective and efficient means to merge technology and nature in a way that can improve students’ vocabulary development, math skills, and enhance their sense of wonder.”

Attorney Joseph Nicks, the independent investigator looking into allegations made by former players and their families against head men’s basketball coach Brian Wardle, has delivered his final report to the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay.

Chancellor Tom Harden said this morning (Wednesday, May 15) that the University will publicly release the investigator’s report as soon as it is legally permissible to do so.

Because the allegations arise out of Mr. Wardle’s employment at the University, the Wisconsin Public Records law requires the institution to provide a notification to him that the report will be publicly released.

That notification is consistent with past UW System practice and the open records law provision. Mr. Wardle has up to 10 days to review his copy of the report and challenge whether all or part of the document should be released.

Before the report and any decision are released to the public, Chancellor Harden is planning to meet with Coach Wardle. The Chancellor said the University will have no further comment until the report is made public.

The UW-Green Bay Small Business Development Center will partner with the city of Green Bay and other entities to offer an “Opportunities in Franchising” workshop from 8 a.m.-2:30 p.m. Wednesday, July 10 at the Hyatt on Main, 333 Main St., Green Bay.

Presented by the International Franchise Association (IFA), the oldest and largest trade association representing franchising, the workshop is designed for for individuals who want to own or expand their own business, as well as those who have a general interest in learning how a franchise works. Workshop participants will learn from franchisors, franchisees, a franchise coach and a franchise attorney during the daylong event. They will be introduced to financial and tech-savvy individuals who can help them pursue their goal of business ownership. Special incentives for minorities and women to become franchise owners also will be discussed.

Franchised businesses play an important role in the health of the U.S. economy, according to Miriam L. Brewer, Senior Director of Education and Diversity for the IFA. There are more than 825,000 franchise businesses across 300 business lines that provide nearly 18 million jobs — and generate more than $21 trillion for the U.S. economy — IFA statistics show.

The cost for the “Opportunities in Franchising” workshop is $25, which includes course materials, a continental breakfast, and lunch. Attendees must register in advance by going to the SBDC website, www.uwgb.edu/sbdc. An event flier also is available for download at the site. Contact SBDC Director Ryan Kauth (920-496-2112; kauthr@uwgb.edu) for more information.

The workshop is hosted by the city of Green Bay, the IFA, the UW-Green Bay SBDC, SCORE, Northeast Wisconsin Technical College and Advance — a division of the Green Bay Area Chamber of Commerce.

Ma Manee Moua ‘99, Philosophy, is the founder and owner of Moua Law Office, with offices in Roseville, Minn., a Twin Cities suburb, and Appleton. Previously, she was an assistant attorney general with the state of Wisconsin Department of Justice, where it was believed she was the first Hmong American to serve in such a capacity in any state justice department, nationwide.

Moua is a frequent speaker at campuses and conferences across the Midwest. She has delivered keynotes at Macalester College (Minn.), Edgewood College (Wis.) and UW System institutions in Madison, Parkside, Green Bay and Oshkosh. She has been a speaker and trainer for state agencies including Corrections, the Department of Natural Resources and children’s services. Her topics have included “Overview of the Criminal Justice System,” “Legal Issues and the Hmong,” “Leadership and Issues Affecting Asian Americas” and “Legal Issues and Leadership.”

Moua is fluent in English and Hmong, and has hosted a monthly legal advice show, Xovtooj Cua Haiv Hmoob, on a Twin Cities radio station. She is a contributing writer for the Hmong Pages, a local community newspaper in Minnesota, and co-author of the Auto Accident Q&A series.

In her capacity as a private attorney and former assistant attorney general, Moua has handled significant and complex civil and criminal cases. She has been active at the state and federal trial and appellate court levels, filing and defending cases; negotiating for settlement; and engaging in motions practice, jury trials and writing and arguing appeals. Moua has handled, briefed, argued or successfully tried cases in Minnesota district courts and that state’s Court of Appeals; Wisconsin circuit courts and Wisconsin Court of Appeals, U.S. District Court, and the Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals.

At UW-Green Bay, Moua was a student senator and multi-cultural director in the Student Government Association, an officer of the Southeast Asian Student Union, and founder and co-chair of the People Educating and Communicating Everywhere organization (PEACE) that promoted inter-cultural harmony. She received her bachelor’s degree with honors in Philosophy, along with the Chancellor’s Medallion for academic excellence and the Alumni Association Outstanding Student Award, which is presented to the top graduating senior.

While pursuing her law degree at the University of Wisconsin, Moua was a managing editor for the Wisconsin International Law Journal and president of the Asian Pacific American Law Student Association. She also planned and coordinated the first ever Hmong Legal Symposium held at the law school to encourage and recruit prospective Hmong students to attend law school. In recognition of Moua’s early career achievements, the UW-Green Bay Alumni Association presented her with its Outstanding Recent Alumni Award in 2007.

UW-Green Bay’s 44th spring-summer commencement will take place at the Kress Events Center on campus at 11:30 a.m. Saturday, May 18. About 900 graduating students are eligible to participate. A full house of approximately 5,000 is expected for the presentation of diplomas and the ceremonies that will include Moua’s address.

Sherry Benson of Marinette, who will receive her bachelor’s degree in Social Work with summa cum laude (highest) honors, has been selected to be the student speaker for spring commencement Saturday, May 18 at the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay.

She was nominated for the honor by faculty members in the Professional Program in Social Work. The selection was made by a committee consisting of several of the University’s top officers including the Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs and academic deans.

Benson is a returning adult student who has had a significant impact both on campus and in the community as an advocate for children and families.

President of the Wisconsin Foster and Adoptive Parent Association since 2003, she has been a statewide leader with significant responsibilities to the families the organization represents and the public agencies that rely on these families to aid in the care of neglected and abused children. She has been a speaker at regional and national conferences on the topic of out-of-home care and the merits of family foster care vs. the orphanage model.

Benson received the Governor’s Award for Outstanding Program Development in 2009 for helping to establish a 24-hour helpline for foster and adoptive parents.

Over the last 20 years, Benson has been a foster parent to more than 40 children, bringing them into her home for anywhere from a few months to five years or more to join her own family of biological, adopted and step-children.

She has worked professionally as a parent aide and visitation supervisor for the Marinette County Department of Health and Human Services and currently is employed part time with a community counseling agency. During her junior year field placement for the UW-Green Bay Social Work program, she worked with the Society of St. Vincent de Paul in Marinette. Among other duties, she developed a guide to assist individuals living in poverty to achieve self-sufficiency.

Benson has been accepted to the collaborative master’s degree program in social work sponsored by UW-Green Bay and UW-Oshkosh. She has declared a goal of becoming a psychotherapist and counseling children and families involved in the child welfare system.

She transferred to UW-Green Bay in 2011 after receiving her associate degree with highest honors from Northeast Wisconsin Technical College.

The May 2013 recipient of the Outstanding Student Award as selected by the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay Alumni Association is Areanna Lakowske.

Lakowske, of Sparta, is receiving her bachelor’s degree in Psychology with minors in Human Development and Public Administration, and honors in the major.

She was nominated and selected from among approximately 900 graduating seniors who are eligible to receive diplomas at the Saturday, May 18 commencement ceremony at the Kress Events Center on campus. The UW-Green Bay Alumni Association has been soliciting nominations and designating a single Outstanding Student Award recipient for each graduating class since 1976.

Lakowske will accept the Outstanding Student Award at an awards ceremony for graduating seniors Friday night, May 17. She will also be acknowledged from stage at commencement the following day.

Lakowske is an accomplished student researcher who exhibited posters at the annual UW-Green Bay Academic Excellence Symposium in 2012 and 2013, and at the Midwestern Psychological Association Conference this month in Chicago. Her topic this year was “Personality Influence on Irrational Beliefs and Organizational Commitment.” She also served as a research assistant in her department’s Language Learning Lab, as an intern and volunteer assistant with UW-Green Bay’s Camp Lloyd summer camp for grieving children, and as a teaching assistant for a social sciences statistics course.

A member of the NCAA Division I women’s cross country team at UW-Green Bay, Lakowske is a multiple winner of All-Horizon League academic honors. Over the course of her UW-Green Bay career, she has served as president of the Psychology and Human Development Club and as an officer of the campus chapter of the Psi Chi psychology honor society.
